1997 ford expedition review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The chevrolet/gmc suburban, augmented in 1994 by the slightly smaller chevy tahoe and gmc yukon, were really the only choices for those who wanted a lots of interior space, heavy-duty towing capacity and, properly equipped, the capability of taking to the backwoods. The only other entry with similar size and capabilities was the warlike am general hummer.  the picture has changed now. And with the suburban, at least, garageability can be an issue. But with the world's lowest fuel prices, the mpg issue is offset for u. From the front, it is a near-twin to the ford f-150 pickup truck. The reason for the resemblance is simple: the expedition is based on ford's immensely popular truck--the best-selling vehicle in the country 15 years running--sharing its chassis, drivetrains, suspensions, major interior components and front end body panels. We consider that a benefit, as the f-truck is a handsome, modern design with plenty of rugged hardware underneath.  from the side and rear, the expedition bears a strong resemblance to the smaller explorer. No surprise there, since ford stylists found that the explorer's looks scored well with both current and potential owners. No panels interchange between, however; the expedition is larger in every dimension.  it is handsome, with a sloping hoodline and rounded front end that reflect an interest in aerodynamic design--with reductions in wind noise that result--and a move away from the monster truck image presented by previous bluff-fronted designs. The sides and back are shaped more for utility than style, though what are essentially flat panels are given some visual definition by clever use of trim and rounded corners.  the overwhelming impression is one of size, even though the design disguises the expedition's bulk to some extent. At just over 17 feet in length, this is no wraith. The suburban is even longer, adding a foot-and-a-half to the total. Ford touts the shorter length as making its entry compatible with a standard garage, which the suburban, they say, is not. Differences are confined to paint and trim, and even these distinctions can be blurred further by checking off items from a long list of optional equipment. Depending on seating configuration, the expedition can carry five (front bucket seats, center bench), or six (front full-width seat, center bench) passengers, plus two more if the optional third seat is installed. First- and second-row occupants get separate heat/vent/air conditioning controls, with a set for the third seat optional.  visually, the expedition interior is most appealing. The eddie bauer roof console adds a digital display of the driver's choice of date/time, average fuel economy or compass, plus a switch for the power swing-out rear quarter windows.  materials and finish quality are all first rate. Particularly noteworthy are the soft-touch coverings applied to switches (which are also internally lit at night, a nice touch) and door panels. driving impressiona first-time expedition driver's initial impression is, inevitably, one of being surrounded by a lot of sheet metal. This is a big machine, requiring extra care in close-quarter maneuvering. But bulk doesn't make the expedition difficult to drive. On the contrary; the speed-sensitive variable-assist steering keeps effort down to a reasonable level, and driver sightlines, augmented by big side mirrors, are excellent.  it is also a comfortable machine. The ride, while not as soft as that of a traditional family sedan or wagon, is good, and cornering roll and brake dive are effectively controlled. The 2wd version is slightly smoother on the highway thanks to its independent front suspension, but both 2wd and 4wd models are very good considering their size and weight. Also part of the system is a one-inch increase in ride height, and a 'kneel-down' facility that makes ingress and egress easier.  two v8 engine choices, 4. 6 liters (standard) and 5. 4 liters are available in the expedition. They share basic architecture--a cast-iron cylinder block with aluminum single overhead cam cylinder heads--and differ only in capacity and power output. We prefer the optional engine, because it produces more torque at lower engine speed. Both versions are relatively quiet, and provide respectable acceleration. Both can tow good-sized loads--6100 pounds for the 4. 6, up to 8000 with the 5. 4-liter. Those capabilities are better than the tahoe/yukon, though certain suburban powertrain combinations can raise the towing ante to 10,000 pounds, if that's a priority.  like all of the brute utes, the expedition's fuel consumption is on the high side. summaryon or off the highway, the ford expedition raises the stakes in its two-player segment. It is subjectively more comfortable and refined than its gm rivals, easier to maneuver, and has up-to-date styling inside and out. Power Windows✔ Bucket Seats✔ CD Changer✔ Air Conditioning

1999 pontiac grand am review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A vastly improved chassis backs up bold new looks. introductionpontiac is launching a totally new grand am for 1999 with new exterior styling, a redesigned interior, a re-engineered chassis and suspension, a bigger optional v6 engine, and more convenience features. Dealers are moving the '98 models out as fast as possible to make way for the new one, which is beginning to arrive in showrooms and roll out onto the streets now.  bold, new styling with aggressive ribbed body work is designed to draw even more attention to this sporty compact than before. Redesigned interiors make it more comfortable, while new convenience features make life a little easier.  but the best news for the grand am is its re-engineered chassis and suspension tuning, which improve handling and ride comfort substantially over previous models. walkaroundlast year's grand am offered look-at-me styling, but the 1999 model takes this a step further with pontiac's trademark ribbed body cladding. Ribs are everywhere. They start at the front bumper, wrap around the front fenders, along the doors, down the rear fenders and around the rear bumper. The design is carried through the side mirrors and even the optional rear spoiler employs the rib theme. It all works together, making the new grand am a sportier, more attractive car than the '98 model. Body-colored door handles and side moldings enhance the sporty look. Add cats-eye headlamps, a twin port grille, round driving lamps and that wide track stance and there's no question this is a pontiac.  that wide-track pontiac stance is even more athletic this year. The front track--the distance between the left and right tires--is a significant 3. 3 inches wider, yet the width of the car has increased only 1. 5 inches. Likewise, the wheelbase has been stretched a substantial 3. 6 inches, while the overall length of the car is slightly reduced. In effect, the wheels have been pushed farther out toward the corners of the car. This gives the grand am a more aggressive, sporty appearance. It also increases stability at high speeds, in corners and in cross winds. Grand-am's 107-inch wheelbase is the longest in its class.  beneath the grand am's sporty appearance is a structure that is 32 percent more rigid than the 1998 model. That's good news for drivers and passengers because the stiffer unitbody on the 1999 model allowed gm engineers to design a new three-link rear suspension for more precise control of the wheels and better noise and vibration damping. That adds up to improved handling and ride quality, areas where previous grand ams left something to be desired.  more good news: bigger front brakes have reduced braking distances by 14 percent, according to pontiac. New aluminum brake calipers reduce unsprung weight, which should improve handling in bumpy corners. All grand ams come standard with antilock brakes (abs) and electronic traction control, both of which make the car easier to control in limited traction situations.  pontiac is proud of the new grand am's rear cornering lamps. Small round lights positioned on the corners of the rear bumper are designed to complement the standard backup lights by directing light at 45-degree angles to the sides and rear of the vehicle. Base se trim comes with air conditioning, aggressive p215/60r15 tires mounted on 15-inch wheels and many other standard features. Grand am coupes in se trim start at $16,395.  with cruise control and alloy wheels, a sedan in se1 trim retails for $17,995 and should be very popular.  at the top of the line is the $19,495 sedan in se2 trim, which includes the v6 and low-profile p225/50r16 tires on 16-inch alloy wheels. interiorgrand am's bold exterior is carried through inside with a sporty retro-dash. Circular hoods shroud the instruments and ventilation ducts and remind us of sports cars past. It's an attractive look that adds to the sports appeal of the grand am. Warm, red light illuminates the instruments, which are large and easy to read. Audio and climate controls are angled toward the driver for easy access and heating, ventilation and air conditioning are adjusted with big round knobs as god intended.  strapping on the new grand am reveals that the seating position is slightly higher than before. Coupled with a lower cowl and thin a-pillars, that makes it easier to see out front. A six-way power driver's seat is optional with se2 trim and grand am engineers put a lot of effort into its adjustable lumbar support.  several features add convenience to the grand am. Automatic lighting control can be set to switch on the headlights at nightfall, then turn them off 20 seconds after the ignition is switched off, giving the driver some time to unlock a house or garage door. Battery rundown protection automatically turns off all accessory lights after 20 minutes in case they were left on by mistake.  a delayed locking feature can be programmed to automatically lock the doors within seven seconds of closing the last door. That eliminates the need for trusting passengers to lock their doors and permits quick retrieval of forgotten items. When the driver removes the key from the ignition, three chimes indicate the system is activated. It locks the car seven seconds after the last door is closed. If a door is opened before that time, the timer stops and starts over when the door is closed again. Exterior lights flash twice and the horn beeps to confirm the doors are locked.  a related system automatically locks the doors when the shifter is moved out of the park position. There's a noticeable absence of shimmy and shake and rattles over potholes. It's also much quieter inside.  miami's busy roads provided little opportunity to fully explore chassis dynamics, but compared with the previous model, the new grand am feels taut. It provides sharper steering response and makes the driver feel better connected to the road.  we focused on driving a sedan equipped with the standard 2. 4-liter engine and the se1 trim package as that's what most people are expected to buy. Ride quality has been improved substantially and, though we did not get an opportunity to fully test its handling dynamics, the suspension seems to control the wheels more precisely than before. Its new interior is more attractive and more comfortable and new features add convenience.  all this comes at little cost as prices for the 1999 model have essentially remained unchanged over 1998 levels. When that is weighed against the improved driving experience, the all-new 1999 pontiac grand am has a lot to offer.  bold new styling makes the 1999 grand am look even sportier than the 1998 model. 2002 ford taurus review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Soccer mom with sex appeal. introductiontaurus is the popular mid-size sedan without the boredom factor. It's a bowl of chocolate-chip mint in a sea of plain vanilla. While most sedans in its class seem designed to blend into the scenery, the taurus stands out like a wildebeest in plaid pajamas.  not only does the taurus look like it came from the future, it drives like it came over from europe, and with something double its really quite reasonable price tag. Two engines are available, and both deliver a vigorous response. Taurus rides smoothly enough for family duty, but with crisp and sporty handling that would satisfy an aspiring formula 1 driver.  not only that, but the cabin is functional and attractive, with controls that are straightforward and easy to use. The materials, switchgear and interior textures have a high-quality look and feel. lineupin fact, the only serious downside of the taurus is its dauntingly confusing model lineup. Already one of the most complicated we have ever seen, it has been subtly reshuffled for 2002.  lx 18,750) is the least changed of the trim levels. Ses deluxe 21,675) adds bucket seats, console, floor-mounted gear selector, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a rear spoiler. It also comes with 'aero' bumpers and the more powerful engine, automatic headlights, automatic climate control, power adjustable pedals, heater mirrors, a perimeter anti-theft system, machined aluminum road wheels, and both cassette and cd capability. In general, however, taurus wagons are slightly better equipped than their sedan counterparts. Of cargo; or with six passengers aboard, there's still 38. 8 cu. Behind them.  as mentioned, two engines power the taurus. Lower-level models use a 3. 0-liter ohv 12-valve v6 ford calls the vulcan (presumably after the god of iron working, not earth's staunchest interplanetary ally). The vulcan produces 155 horsepower and 185 pounds-feet of torque. Although not particularly quick from a standstill, once rolling it delivers more than adequate performance, along with a nicely rorty exhaust note.  the more sophisticated duratec v6 displaces the same 3. 0 liters, but has dual overhead cams working 24 valves. This higher-revving power plant produces 200 horsepower and 200 pounds-feet of torque. The grille is broad, aggressive, and unmistakably ford-oval, grinning between the large cat's-eye headlamps. Taurus' flanks undulate handsomely with crisp character lines, and its rear end bears a resemblance to the sexy stern of the jaguar s-type. interiorseating arrangements have been revised for 2002. Lx and se sedans, previously five-seaters, now nominally seat six, thanks to a seating console between their separate front seats. This is the same arrangement used on last year's ses, and that model keeps it for 2002. Leather bucket seats are a no-charge option in every taurus sedan except the lx.  all wagons have the seating console, but sel deluxe versions also offer leather buckets as a no-cost option.  primary controls and instrumentation are admirably simple, straightforward and easy to use. Ford's well-publicized adjustable pedals (standard on sel, and a $120 option on most other tauri) make a comfortable driving position possible for even very short-legged drivers. The small-diameter, leather-wrapped steering wheel (ses deluxe on up) has a pleasingly thick grip. Buttons for the cruise control are mounted on the steering wheel and are easy to operate. The highly legible white-on-black gauges include an analog speedometer and tachometer. A single stalk on the left of the steering column operates the washer and wipers and the bright/dim control for the headlights. The power-window automatic-down circuit operates on the driver's-side window only, and there is no automatic-up. On the dashboard just below the tachometer is an on/off switch for the optional traction control, useful when driving with chains and/or in snow.  on the other hand, the central console containing audio and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (hvac) controls is an intimidating sea of similar-looking push-buttons and toggle switches. While elsewhere the taurus is ergonomically first-rate, operating the controls on this panel requires careful reading of the various closely spaced labels. Among the audio controls, only the volume is a rotary knob. It would be more convenient if the station-tuner were a twist-knob as well.  the removable six-cd changer/cassette is cleverly concealed in the center console at the driver's right elbow. With only one touch of the button, it opened automatically. But to close it requires holding the button down, perhaps for safety considerations. The cushions and seatbacks are more firm than soft, but firm is usually best on long drives.  the roomy rear compartment seats three, although the seat forms two semi-buckets and has a pull-down central armrest containing two cupholders. An hvac duct at the rear of the center console provides climate control for rear passengers. Dual baby-seat anchors are provided on each side of the rear seat. In the se wagon and ses and sel sedans, the rear seatback is split 60/40 and folds down, providing an enormous pass-through luggage capability for skis and other long items. The trunk is of generous size and contains the taurus' mini-spare tire. driving impressionthe 2002 ford taurus is a genuinely satisfying car to drive. Its duratec v6 is as responsive as a finger snap, delivering crisp acceleration from low revs straight through to the glass-smooth full-throttle shift point. This engine not only provides good thrust, it makes an understated but nicely throaty declaration that it means business. Its shifts are positive, authoritative, and at the same time, almost impossible to feel. Its all-independent suspension provides a smooth, impact-free ride. Unusual in a family sedan, taurus uses gas-pressurized shock absorbers, so that when it is pushed in the corners, it remains stable, nimble and ready for more. Cornered hard, its body roll is moderate, and the nicely tuned variable-ratio power rack-and-pinion steering delivers a steady stream of road information.
